Cartoon, Cannon-Fodder and After -- Kaiser Wilhelm speaks to a 1917 recruit: "And don't forget that your Kaiser will find a use for you - alive or dead." This refers to a story which originated in April 1917 in The Times and The Daily Mail, claiming that the Germans were sending bodies of their fallen comrades from the Western Front to be rendered down into fats, which were then used to manufacture nitroglycerine, candles, lubricants, and even boot dubbing.
