Description | Cartoon, Nupkins's Justice |
Details |
A 'ragged' boy listens to the words of the 'Learned Magistrate', as a smug looking policeman watches. The magistrate says, "Hear the evidence for the defence? Nonsense! I won't hear a word of it! What's the use? - I could not think of doubting a policeman's word." The cartoon conveys what was most likely a widespread belief in the late nineteenth century, that the police account could always be trusted.
