Description | Cartoon, Permissive Government (Disraeli and Hartington) |
Details |
Cartoon, Permissive Government -- a conversation between Lord Hartington, new leader of the Liberal Party (in opposition), and Benjamin Disraeli, Conservative Prime Minister. Hartington suggests that Disraeli's government is rather weak, and only exists on sufferance. In reply, Disraeli quotes Shylock's words from The Merchant of Venice: 'Sufferance is the badge of all our tribe' -- a direct and somewhat gratuitous reference to his Jewish ancestry.
