Description | Cartoon, Protestant Mummeries |
Details |
Cartoon, Protestant Mummeries -- a satirical comment on High Church Anglo-Catholic practices in the Protestant Church of England, with Victorian clergymen in ornate vestments, candles on the altar, and altarboys swinging incense. They are watched with consternation by Latimer and Cranmer (Protestant Oxford Martyrs of the 16th century), who find the showy theatricality rather worrying. "What manner of men are these who thus perform our Master's work!"
