Description | Cartoon, Purging the Church |
Details |
Cartoon, Purging the Church -- a satirical comment on High Church Anglo-Catholic practices in the Protestant Church of England, with Victorian clergymen in ornate vestments, candles on the altar, and altarboys with incense censers. They are being chased out of the church by a lawyer holding a whip in his hand. Controversy over Catholic-style church practices culminated a few years later in an Act of Parliament, the Public Worship Regulation Act of 1874, but that in itself was controversial, and was repealed nearly 100 years later.
