Cartoon, Rebecca and Her Daughters. A parody of an illustration which appeared in the Illustrated London News in February of the same year. The original riots took place in Wales, as protests against toll gate charges. This cartoon depicts the Irish reforming politician and nationalist leader, Daniel O'Connell, as an Irish Rebecca, and his 'daughters' as members of the Repeal Association, fighting for the rights of the Irish people against rents, church rates, tithes and poor laws, with Sir Robert Peel as the powerless Tolltaker, hiding behind his toll booth door.
