Cartoon, The Silent Highway Man, Your money or your life! 'The Great Stink' of 1858, during the months of July and August, hot weather exacerbated the smell in the centre of London, caused by industrial effluent and untreated human waste being emptied from the sewers directly into the River Thames for several years, miasma was thought to transmit contagious diseases.
