Description Celebrating the Jubilee on Board a Man of War - Extra Ration
Details

Distribution of 'grog' (watered down rum) on board HMS 'Sultan' to celebrate the Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887. As can be seen, several non-commissioned officers (and perhaps the purser) are keeping an eye on proceedings to ensure the proper allocation. 'Grog' was so called as it was first issued under the order of Admiral Edward Vernon, whose nickname was 'old Grogram' after the material his cape was made of. Prior to this the Royal Navy issued straight rum to its seamen and Admiral Vernon was motivated by a desire to cut down on drunken accidents.
