Description | Children around the coffin of Dr. Barnardo |
Details |
Children of Dr. Barnardo's Homes give a last tribute to their benefactor as they mill around his coffin during the lying in state in the chapel of Edinburgh Castle. The Edinburgh Castle, which took the place of a public house of that name in the East End, was one of the centres of Dr. Barnardo's work. While his body lay in state there it was visited by a procession of poor children whom the late philanthropist had benefited. Thomas John Barnardo (1845-1905) is a classically Victorian figure - evangelical, entrepreneurial and philanthropic. His crusade to 'rescue children from the streets' was one the best known social interventions in the last half of the nineteenth century.
