Description | Chunee the elephant |
Details |
Chunee (or Chuny) the elephant, killed at Cross's Menagerie, Exeter Exchange, London. Chunee was brought to London from India in 1809 or 1810 and joined the menagerie at Exeter 'Change on the Strand, bought by Edward Cross in 1817. He was tame but became violent towards the end of his life and was thought too dangerous to keep. Soldiers were summoned to shoot Chunee but 152 musket rounds later the elephant was still alive, and had to be finally killed by a keeper with a sword.
