Description | Church Defiled in the Spanish Civil War 1937 |
Details |
A scene in a church, with the priests dead and the poor-box robbed, during the Spanish Civil War. On the wall, a hammer and sickle motif and the legend 'Viva Russia' has been painted. The Spanish Catholic Church supported the Nationalist rebels during the Civil War, which made atrocities such as this one, supposedly performed by the Republican socialists, more inevitable. Such images, whether true or not, were certainly used for propaganda purposes, both in Spain and abroad.
