Details

British soldiers holding a church service on a Sunday, somewhere on the Western Front in France, 1916. The Chaplain (at left, without hat) leads the impromptu service as the British gunners (in the background, right) continue to fire their guns at German positions. The bell (top left) was used to give warnings of gas attacks.
