Details |
Photograph showing Clement Attlee (right) and General Jose Miaja in conversation, Madrid, 1937. Clement Attlee, then leader of the Labour Party in Great Britain, caused something of a stir by visiting the Republican held parts of Spain in 1937. As the British Conservative government was trying to uphold a non-intervention policy with regard to the Spanish Civil War, the arrival of Attlee in the front-line of the conflict caused a certain amount of argument.
