Picture No 11112134
Date 1891
Description Colonialism - Annexation of Ado by the British
Details

The Annexation of the territory of the King of Ado by the British in 1891 - a real pictorial example of the extension of the British Empire. Captain George Chardin Denton (1851-1928), Colonial Secretary of Lagos (Bight of Benin, now Nigeria) taking over dominion of the region under the British flag. The caption below the photograph is (in itself) a quite incredible example of colonial thought and propaganda!
