Picture No 10217178
Date 1854
Description Colour plate commemorating the Crimean War.
Details

The Crimean War (1853-1856) was triggered by Russian expansion into Turkish territory in the Crimea. Following the sinking of the Turkish fleet by the Russians at Sinope in November 1853, Britain and France joined forces with Turkey. The war was characterised by the fateful 'Charge of the Light Brigade' and the appalling conditions in which wounded soldiers were treated, with one in six soldiers dying of disease rather than wounds. The plate shows the Battle of Inkerman in 1854.
