Description Cooking Christmas dinner at the Front
Details

British soldiers cooking two geese for Christmas dinner on a makeshift spit held by rifles, a spade and a couple of sticks. Despite the hardships of trench life in France during World War I, friends and families often sent supplies and luxuries. Depictions of soldiers making the best of Christmas in extreme circumstances encouraged optimism about the war in its early stages.
