Details

Cosmo Gordon Lang (1864 - 1945), Scottish Anglican prelate and Archbishop of Canterbury. Bron in Fyvie, Aberdeenshire, he was the third son of John Marshall Lang (1834-1909), Principal of Aberdeen University. Entering the Church of England in 1890, he was curate at Leeds, became Dean of Divinity at Magdalene College, Oxford, Bishop of Stepney (1901-1908) and canon of St. Paul's. In 1908 he was appointed Archbishop of York and in 1928, Archbishop of Canterbury. He retired in 1942. A man of wide interests, he was accepted by all parties in the Church of England and was both counsellor and friend to the Royal family. He was a central figure during the abdication crisis of 1936.
