British Arctic expedition in the Arctic. The engraving shows a group of men cutting a channel through the ice so that their ship, seen in the background, can escape the ice pack. This image was created in order to give the readers of the 'Illustrated London News' an idea of the conditions that the Franklin and Ross expeditions of the 1840's might encounter in the Arctic.
