Portrait of the late ALEXANDER WILLIAM GEORGE DUFF 6th EARL and 1st DUKE of FIFE (1849 - 1912), husband of Princess Louise Victoria, eldest daughter of Edward VII. Picture and report from the Illustrated London News following the Duke's death on 12th January 1912. The Duke, his wife and two daughters had been travelling on board the SS Delhi for a holiday in Egypt when the ship ran aground off the coast of Morocco in December 1911. The royal family were rescued in stormy conditions and survived but the episode severely affected the Duke's health. He contracted pleurisy and died a month after the disaster.
