Sketch of spot where the Prince's body was found. By special artist Melton Prior. Panoramic view of the plain where the Prince's body was found. He and his party has been making topographical records of the country and stopped by a river to make coffee, sheltering in a native kraal. The Prince was ambushed by 30 Zulus and was unable to mount his horse quickly enough to escape. His impetuosity had got him into danger several times already during the war, to which the British army were compelled to send him after petitions from his mother Empress Eugenie and the Duke of Cambridge.
