Description | Detail of column, St Peter's Church, Conisbrough, Doncaster |
Details |
Detail of a column capital in the nave of St Peter's Church, Conisbrough, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, dating back to the 8th century. It is thought that the column was recycled from a nearby Roman villa. Unfortunately some of the carvings were damaged during the Puritan era, but the remains of a Roman soldier can be seen, while the wavy pattern above is thought to depict the English Channel, as remembered by the Romans who sailed across it.
