Description Development of trench warfare in France by Matania
Details

Protecting the man and armouring the trench. French soldiers wearing the new steel helmet holding an armoured trench during a violent German artillery bombardment. The picture also shows how trenches themselves became further protected such as with the revolving steel cupola which was captured from the Germans and used by the French against the enemy. Scene shows a French armoured trench under heavy enemy fire. All the men are wearing the new steel helmets and are seeking shelter from the severe overhead bombardment.
