Description | Distribution of seed potatoes in Ireland 1886 |
Details |
This scene shows Mr. T. F. Brady, Her Majesty's Inspector of Irish Fisheries distributing 32 tons of seed potatoes Clare Island, west of Ireland. This relief was brought by steamer with extreme difficulty in a terrific storm to relieve the distress caused by extreme hunger. He is standing on the potato sacks distributing them to the Irish peasantry and accompanied by the relieving officer and the local priest. It was desperately difficult for the hungry and famished to abstain from eating these seed potatoes. These miserable conditions were brought on by the potato famine in the mid 19th century.
