Dorothy Gladys (Dodie) Smith (1896 - 1990), English novelist and playwright pictured in the toy department of Heal's furniture store on Tottenham Court Road in London where she worked while she wrote her first play, 'Autumn Crocus' which premiered in 1931 starring Fay Compton and Francis Lederer. Smith wrote it under the pseudonym of 'C. L. Anthony' but when journalists found out her true identity it led to a flurry of 'Shop Girl Writes Play' headlines. Dodie Smith also wrote 'I Capture the Castle' and is best-known for her 'One Hundred and One Dalmations' book.
