Dr. Howard, Medical Officer of New York Harbour, demonstrating his resusciation technique at the Receiving House of the Royal Humane Society, Hyde Park, London. The technique came in two parts; at top left of the image - pumping fluid from the lungs and stomach; and in the main image - compression of the chest, similar in method to working a bellows. Dr. Howard's technique was so revolutionary and successful that he was awarded the national prize of the American Medical Association.
