Portrait of Dr Howie (possibly Dr Howard Sweetser Bliss, 1860-1920) and his two daughters, in Arab costume. From 1903 onwards Dr Bliss was President of the American University of Beirut (known at the time as the Syrian Protestant College). He kept the college open throughout the First World War, and took part in the Paris Peace Conference of 1919.
