Marie Stopes (1880-1958), Scottish author, palaeobotanist, campaigner for women's rights, and pioneer in the field of family planning pictured in court dress to be presented to King George V and Queen Mary in 1924. Born in Edinburgh in 1880, she received her education at University College London, and went on to become the first female science lecturer at Manchester University. After the annulment of her first marriage she turned her attention towards the lack of understanding about sex within marriage. Her book, 'Married Love' was published in 1918, during the same year she married the aircraft manufacturer Humphrey Roe. WIth her husband's help she opened the first British contraception clinic in London.
