Description | Edward VII's yacht, 'Britannia' |
Details |
The Royal yacht, 'Britannia' taken in 1909 during the reign of Edward VII. Originally commissioned by Edward when he was Prince of Wales from G. L Watson, one of the finest yacht designers of his time, the yacht had a successful racing career before being used as a crusing yacht by Edward and Queen Alexandra. The yacht cruised around the coast of Britain to the popular acclaim of the people, and was often used during visits of foreign royalty or statemen. After the death of Edward VII, the yacht's racing career was revived after George V ordered a re-fit. The yacht was broken up at George V's instructions after his death in 1936.
