Effect of the earthquake on a typical frame house. The San Francisco earthquake occurred on the 18th April 1906, measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale. A violent shaking lasted for 45 seconds and could be felt from Southern Oregon to Southern Los Angeles. Three thousand people lost their lives a destruction to property amounted to $400000000.
