Illustration from the life of El Cid, Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar (c1043-1099), Castilian nobleman and military leader in medieval Spain - seen here lying ill, with a vision of St Peter telling him that his life is almost over, and he will soon meet the saints in heaven. He was immortalised in a 12th century Spanish epic poem, El Cantar de Mio Cid, and is the subject of a play by Pierre Corneille, an opera by Jules Massenet, and a film starring Charlton Heston.
