An elephant steeplechase which took place at Rangoon, on the eastern branch of the Irrawaddy river on 25 May 1858. British officers of the garrison at Rangoon rode the 13 elephants dressed in jockey costume with a staff and flag instead of a whip and the animals were steered by Mahouts who received some of the winnings in the sweepstake.
