Photograph to celebrate the engagement of King Alfonso XIII of Spain to Princess Ena of Battenberg in February 1906 entitled, 'The most romantic Royal marriage of modern times'. Ena (1887-1969) was the only daughter of Princess Beatrice, Queen Victoria's youngest daughter, and Prince Henry of Battenberg. She married King Alfonso in May 1906 after converting to Catholicism, and the couple narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on their wedding day. Despite having seven children, the marriage was not a happy one and the couple eventually separated when Alfonso abdicated his throne to make way for the Second Spanish Republic in 1931. Two of their sons, including the eldest were haemophiliacs. The couple are the grandparents of the present King Juan Carlos of Spain.
