Description Explosion at Faversham
Details

The remains of a gun cotton or gun powder mill at Faversham's Marsh Works, Kent, which was destroyed in a violent explosion in 1847. The blast was so strong that it was heard 17 miles away. Trees were uprooted, windows smashed and roofs of all buildings within a quarter of a mile were stripped of their tiles. Many were killed in the explosion; the limbs of workers being found in adjacent fields and meadows.
