Description | Famine and funeral at Skibbereen, Ireland 1847 |
Details |
The famine disaster in Ireland in the mid-19th century brought about many premature deaths. Destitute people in Skibbereen often lay dead for days without burial as the rate of death was so high and resources so few. These miserable conditions were brought on by the potato famine in the mid 19th century and further compounded by the forced evictions of poverty-stricken peasants from their homes and farms.
