Father Serapion, an English or Irish Mercedarian friar, offers himself as a hostage in order to free captive Christians in Algeria, North Africa. He is tied to cross and slowly cut to pieces by the Muslims. He was canonised, and is known as Saint Serapion of Algiers (1179-1240).
