Faust in Auerbach's wine cellar. Faust, is a legend dating back to early Christianity but in its present form based on Dr. Johann Faust who lived in Heidelberg during the sixteenth century. It is an allegorical tale where a disillusioned man gains earthly power and riches through a pact with the devil. This scene shows where he succoumbs to Mesphistopheles' powers of persuasion and enters a bawdy wine cellar. The story was has been adapted by Marlowe, Goethe and Wagner among others.
