Frederick Roberts,1st Earl Roberts (1832û1914), Anglo-Irish soldier and one of the most successful commanders of the Victorian era - notable for his actions during the African wars. Colonel-in-Chief of the 'Forces from Overseas' at the start of WWI - Roberts died of pneumonia at St Omer, France, on 14th November 1914 while visiting Indian troops fighting at the front. Pictured during the campaign in South Africa, 1902.
