First Gas Lamp 1814, Last Oil Lamp 1842. When the Gas Lamp at last put the Oil Lamp to flight, T'was not only lighter, but safer, at night. Showing a bright street lamp, with a couple out for a walk, flunkeys with a sedan chair, a lamplighter with a ladder, and two thieves skulking away into the shadows.
