Description | Flying Boat in River Dangu |
Details |
The 'Corsair' flying boat of Imperial Airways lies half-submerged in the River Dangu, Belgian Congo (Zaire) following a forced landing in March 1939 during a flight from Durban to Southampton. One wing is jacked up by means of pontoons constructed out of the petrol tanks dismantled from lorries. The Corsair was repaired, a dam constructed to form a lake, and an attempt made to take off in June. The attempt failed and having struck a rock, further repairs were needed. Finally, in January 1940, with another dam constructed, the Corsair was finally returned to England.
