Crowds in the streets in Versailles watching balloon overhead. During the siege of Paris post came in and out of Paris by balloon and the famous escape of Leon Gambetta, Minister of the Interior for the Government of National Defence, took place by balloon in September 1870. Many ILN and Graphic artists got their sketches out of Paris by balloon.
