Portraits of military personnel including: a veteran, a mastermind, a doctor, a stretcher bearer, an officer of state, a home guard, a drummer, a captain in the home guard, a foot soldier, an gunner and a pupil of the Republic. In 1870 and 1871 France was torn by conflict; first the Franco-Prussian War, then the Paris Commune. Both ended in sieges of Paris and involved heavy loss of life.
