The controversial American winner of the 1908 Olympic marathon. Although beaten to the finish by the Italian competitor, Dorando, Hayes won by default as the exhausted Dorando was aided after he collapsed. Princess Alexandra was moved to award Dorando a special gold cup in consolation. An amateur runner, Hayes worked as a clerk in a goods store in New York.
