Illustration of a Fumigation Barge, pumping Sulphur Dioxide into the holds of ship to kill rats and other vermin, London. As sulphur dioxide is heavier than air, it was an ideal disinfectant in ships as it sank into all the awkward spaces at the bottom of the hold.
