Picture No 10804494
Date 1917
Description German Instruments of War Torture, WW1
Details

Examples of German barbarity in The Graphic magazine including machines for spreading asphyxiating gas and inflammable fluids, as well as explosive bullets (centre, top). The flame-thrower, or 'flammenwerfer (shown in the bottom image) was first used by the Germans but eventually adopted by all combatants. It could fire a continuous stream of fire but had disadvantages. The operator of the flame-thrower was very prominent and were easy targets for the enemy.
