Victors and vanquished: British infantry advancing on Thiepval, Somme region, in September 1916 allow surrendering Germans to pass through their ranks unregarded. The remnants of the German infantry in the front line trenches who escaped with their lives came forward with their hands up and passed through to British lines as prisoners.
