Gertrude Ederle, American competition swimmer, attempting to swim the British channel, who was accompanied not only by wireless operators and her trainer, but by a jazz band for motivational support. Unfortunately, on this occasion, the jazz band didn't work and Gertrude had to give up after nine hours. She would become the first woman to swim the Channel the following year.
