Description | Gieve life saving waistcoat for torpedoed shipwreck victims, |
Details |
Advertisement for the Gieve life-saving waistcoat from Gieves Ltd, The Royal Naval Outfitters, intended for use by victims of torpedoed ships during the First World War. It could be worn as an ordinary waistcoat under uniform, inflated easily in seconds and was fitted with a brandy flask! The advert claims it was the one known and reliable means of life-saving from U-boats and mine disasters, a claim confirmed by a testimonial from one man who, not trusting lifeboats, preferred to use it when he himself was on a torpedoed boat.
