Front cover of The Graphic newspaper with engravings showing scenes of a visit to the preliminary tunnelling works near Dover for the start of the Channel Tunnel in 1882. Visitors are pictured going underground in a cage, seated in a tram car in the tunnel, inspecting the boring machine and enjoying 'refreshments' in the form of a glass of champagne in the half-way siding. The work was halted later that year due to security concerns.
