SECOND PUNIC WAR : Hannibal, the Carthaginian leader, though outnumbered by the Romans, wins a decisive victory at the Battle of Cannae thanks to his superior cavalry. According to Polybius he loses 5700 men (Livy puts it at 8000), whyile the Romans (again, according to Livy) lose just under 50,000.
