Description | Herr Julius Seeth and his lions in a car, London Hippodrome |
Details |
Herr Julius Seeth of the London Hippodrome, taking his forest-bred lions for a trip on a Daimler motor car while performing there in 1903. The Tatler reports how one lion, Abdullah, took big mouthfuls out of the wheels, another, Menelik, took most kindly and with imperial dignity to motoring (presumably he's the one standing in the wagon) and another sat on a wing board which promptly collapsed. Note the silver grille around the Hippodrome's arena, which was raised by hydraulic rams to protect the audience during performances involving wild animals.
